on CBSM Making an Impact…Globally

Chuck Rheam (church planter out of San Diego, CA with Centerpoint Church) was CBSM’s guest speaker during our church’s GIC: Global Impact Celebration conference on missions.  He whipped up a powerful sermon for our students on Saturday night of the conference.  Check it out here if you weren’t able to listen.  He basically preached on: “Do you have what it takes to be a missionary.”  Listen to find out what it takes, and how to grow in it.

That’s what he said.

floundersAs I’m chillin down in Pensacola, FL right now with my family, we went to the busiest restaurant on the beach – Flounders.  My mom always beats me to the punch by asking the server what could we pray for them about since we pray before every meal.  Finally, I beat her!  I asked the dude, “Man, we’re about to pray before we eat, is there anything we can be praying for you about?”  He said he had to think about it.  Several minutes later he came back and said, “I got one.  This is the busiest restaurant on the beach, and we have about 50 new servers on staff who don’t know what they’ve gotten into.  We’re a family restaurant until 9pm rolls around.  Then we ask the families with children to leave, we pump the music, we turn this place into a dance club, we break out all the drinks…we have wet tshirt contests and everything.”  To all that I just said, “Well there’s a lot to pray for in that situation!”  Then he said, “So pray for our staff to serve them well.”  Let me recap…I asked for prayer to the Holy, Almighty God.  He asked for prayer for his servers to keep serving alcohol, to keep the party going, and to keep the tshirts wet.  That’s what he said!  I’m still not sure how to pray…except for salvation and judgment :)

Seminary and Student Ministry (part 6): the importance of teaching on the SPIRIT

holy-spiritFree file for youth pastors:

Paper: How does Acts teach about the Holy Spirit?

When we talk about the Holy Ghost, we scare little children.  When we talk about the Holy Spirit, we excite teenagers.  So many people look at the Holy Spirit as either a spiritual energy drink Who’s going to make them feel the energy of Jesus, or more like a spiritual shot Who’s going to make them lose all control.  Have you ever thought any of these questions to yourself: Continue reading ‘Seminary and Student Ministry (part 6): the importance of teaching on the SPIRIT’

Storyline #25: Numbers 1-10 “WHO’S COUNTING? The promises, place, and people of Christ”

One of my favorite movie series was Home Alone.  You remember, where the family wakes up late in the morning to catch their flight out of town for their Christmas vacation.  The family was so huge and so rushed that they forgot one of their kids: Kevin.  Then Kevin had to stay Home Alone, provide for himself, and fend off burglars.  My favorite scene was the bricks in Home Alone 2.  I’ll try to attach that here.  This movie reminds us: counting is important!

In a similar way, Israel is about to leave for a trip, and they are to be counted.  But they aren’t going on vacation, rather they are leaving the mountain of God and heading towards the land He has promised to give them.  They also aren’t counting just to make sure everyone is present, but God tells them to count to show the people that God is faithful to His promises. Students being saved!

In the past few weeks we’ve had several students saved in our student ministry.  I think many student ministries might be experiencing this, but let me tell you why I’m especially excited about this.  We don’t teach or preach an “easy-believism” gospel at all.  We never have students repeat a prayer after us.  We never have students merely raise their hands if they want to be saved…and then pronounce them saved.  What we do is…preach the gospel of Jesus Christ (His identity, life, death, resurrection, and Lordship).  We are very clear that salvation isn’t just believing in Jesus as Savior, but also following Him as Lord (Romans 10:9-10, 13).  We preach very explicitly that salvation is discipleship which means that to be saved means also that you desire to live and follow Jesus.  Statistics waver somewhere between 50% - 90% of church-going students who graduate from high school never return to the church again.  Why are we shocked with this when we just ask students to repeat a prayer of salvation after us, or we baptize them without them fully being able to articulate the gospel and show evidence of their faith in Christ?  1 John 2:19 says that the reason people leave the church is because they never truly were apart of the church…or Christ.  To counter that, we are preaching a full-gospel, a loving gospel, and a powerful gospel.  We’re preaching a gospel that calls for repentance of sin, and a gospel that calls students to walk after Christ.  And praise God by the work of His Spirit…students are being saved for the glory of His Son!

SYATP – 1 Timothy 2:1-7 “PRAY, PRAY, PRAY, and PRAY: the way to win people to Christ”

“See You At The Pole” is coming up next Wednesday, September 24th.  I’ve been involved in SYATP for years, but I didn’t realize how it was birthed until recently.  Apparently, a youth group was so moved by God over a Disciple Now Weekend that they didn’t want to go to their homes, eat their snacks, or chill out in front of the TV’s.  Instead, they went straight to their schools to pray around their flag poles begging God to work in their schools what He’s worked in their lives.  Well, the word spread like wild file.  Within the next few months (September 12, 1990), the first SYATP was official, and 45,000 students showed up to pray around their school’s flag poles.  The next year, 1 million students came to pray on SYATP day.  Reports say that today over 3 million students from all 50 states and over 20 are SYAPTers. Framework #12 – MACRO Theology – View of Apologetics: How does theology answer the world?

I remember feeling so helpless and powerless.  When I was 18 and working at a golf course in Tuscaloosa, the regular morning drill was getting paired off to go out on the golf carts and accomplish the daily golf course duties.  On one morning, I was paired up with Matt, who was a devout and practicing Roman Catholic able to explain his faith very well.  After hearing his spiel, I was perplexed.  How could I ever put my faith in “the gospel of Jesus Christ alone” into words in such a way that would convince him to believe my way over his?  But that was the problem.  I was only thinking of it as trying to explain my faith rather than explaining THE faith!

I often like to think back on the journey God has taken me through to get to where I am now.  I grew up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.  From there I spent time in Pensacola for college, back in Tuscaloosa for more college, northeast Pennsylvania to graduate college, northwest Michigan for three summers of camps, Detroit for a year long youth ministry internship, Louisville for the masters degree, southeast Indiana for my first full-time youth pastorate, and now I live in the Huntsville area of Alabama for my dream job.  God certainly did not tell me at the beginning that I would end up here, and I’m glad He didn’t.  If He had, I may have been tempted to skip a few stops along the way which would mean I wouldn’t have met all the wonderful people in my life.  Ultimately, I would have not grown from every experience He took me through.

As we study the life of Abraham, we see that God did tell him the future. Continue reading ‘Storyline #07 – Genesis 12-25 – You Must Be Trippin: Calling, Blessing, and Struggling’

Dubai is one of the most amazing cities ever designed on our planet. They have developed islands that are shaped like the 7 continents of the world and islands that are shaped like a palm tree. Dubai has the tallest hotel in the world, an indoor ski slope (since they are in the desert), and much more. They are also in the process of building the tallest building in the world. It is unfinished, but apparently it will be over a half-mile high when they are done. Continue reading ‘Storyline #06 – Genesis 10-11 – Tearing the Tower Down…Brick by Brick’

“Whatever you do, don’t press that button!”  Think way back with me and remember the original Nintendo Entertainment System.  You teenagers today have it so easy with your memory cards and hard-drives which save your games for later play!  On the NES, we had to pause it and leave the system on when we left the house.  But the worst was when someone would press the “reset” button when you were in the middle of an important game.
