Curt Mize is my go to guy. Whenever I’m out of town and Curt is available, I want him teaching CBSM! Curt will be a sophomore at Auburn University this semester, he is heavily involved in ministry at one of the greatest churches in America there, and he has a heart and mind for Christ. God has gifted him to preach the stars down. So when I was out of town for our San Diego CBSM mission trip, I asked Curt to preach on Idolatry to stay within the Worship series that we’ve been going through. God led him to Acts 19 with a super practical sermon on how to delete idolatry from your life and worship Jesus only. Check it out! 9b – Acts 19 – iWorship by Deleting Idols (mp3)

Justin is one of our CBSM summer interns. Our summer interns are given tons of responsibilities like: write a message each each from the passage CBSM is going through that week, walk through their study of the message with Pastor Chip, go to staff meetings, go to CBSM small groups, lead a CBSM small group once over the summer, take one student out to eat to mentor them each week, complete miscellaneous tasks, work for/with each church staff member, etc. Since Justin believes he is called to be a youth pastor, I also gave him an opportunity to teach our students. So here he goes…Mark 5…The Authority of Christ in Missions (by Justin Nettles). Mark 5 on The Authority of Christ in Missions by Justin Nettles (mp3)
I’m so thankful for the opportunity from ELHS to speak their Graduate Baccalaureate service this year. I was so impressed with the attention these graduates, their friends, their families, and their fans gave the Word of God being preached. Here’s what I believe God gave me to preach to a huge class of 2010 graduates. As they were going into the military, into college, and into the workforce…I wanted to make sure they knew their God (and Gospel through Jesus), their Gift (how God has gifted them to serve Him), and their Group (the kind of church God is calling them to be a part of).

Over our church’s mission conference called “GIC: Global Impact Celebration”, CBSM had in guest speaker, Chuck Rheam, who is an awesome church planter in San Diego, CA. As our students are challenged to be involved in missions, we don’t want them to forget the incredible missions opportunities going on all over our nation: church planting. Listen to Pastor Chuck for a strong challenge to be involved in church planting in some way, shape, form, or fashion. And for an extra added bonus, something we never get to do, our CBSM praise band plays too songs at the end of the mp3…acoustic style.

For whatever reason, God is graciously choosing to bless our student ministry with an extraordinary amount of students who believe they are called to full-time ministry…or starting to sense and consider that call. I’m honestly not sure why. There are nights that I preach the gospel for salvation, and students are called to ministry. Its weird, its crazy, but its happening. Just FYI: the biggest TREAT in this entire post is hearing close to 20 teens talk about God’s call on their life and what ministry they believe they’re called to. Definitely check out the mp3! Our students walked into an almost completely dark student building. Most of our lights were turned off, and a few of our led’s were turned to red and yellow to look like torches and turned down low. The mood was set to look like many of the churches meeting around the world in secret, danger, and fear for their lives…as well as many churches like that back in church history. We stripped away all of the bells and whistles. We did 4 sessions (each an hour long) of 5 minutes of singing, 40 minutes of teaching, and 5-10 minutes of prayer. Amazingly after 4 hours of sessions centered around teaching doctrine, our students simply asked, “Its over? That’s it? Can’t we stay longer?” Now that is the joy and purpose of the Persecuted Church. Here’s more about our Persecuted Church event… Continue reading ‘Framework #26 – Persecuted Church: Doctrine of the Holy Spirit’

Jacob is one of our past CBSM students who has graduated out of the student ministry and is studying to be a youth pastor while at the University of Mobile. He is one of our student’s favorite guest speakers whenever he returns and is able to preach during our student worship service. This time, me and 18 of our students were out of town (along with Jacob’s parents) to San Diego, CA for a mission trip, so Jacob filled in and preached. It was also on the day before he left for a mission trip to Wales. Jacob understands how Scripture is in light of Christ and how to apply all of Scripture to daily life. I’d definitely encourage you to listen to his mp3.
Last night we had a sweet college worship service. One of our high school graduates (’08) Jeremy Coburn brought in the praise band that he’s a part of: “Selfless Praise.” They rocked the house with some intense worship songs that focused our hearts onto Christ.
Between their two worship sets, I had the opportunity to address our college students. The reason we had this event was to welcome in our new college ministry members who had just graduated from high school. So I wanted to speak from a passage that would introduce to them our purpose as a college ministry and challenge them to live lives of worship. So I landed on a really interesting passage that is very popular, but its also very misunderstood from my angle. So feel free to check out the mp3 and read the notes on Romans 12:1-2 “How’s Your Worship?: Spiritual Worship with our Physical Bodies.”
