Student Leadership Training at CBSM

I had a past professor/friend who asked me what we did to train leaders within our student ministry.  I thought I’d share with you my most honest answer:

“First of all, we define leadership here at CBSM as: following Christ and bringing others along with you. So, our first focus is to center all of students onto Christ, and then we offer leadership training for those who want to both follow Christ and lead others toward Him. We do this in several different ways of course. First, we do this through preaching. I am convinced that I am called to primarily preach to my 12 grade guys even though there are students present in the room all the way down to 7th grade. I’ve learned that if I focus on my 12th grade guys, then I will reach them and all other students under them. But if I focus on younger students, I will get the younger students back…but I won’t get any of the older students for the most part. So training for leadership first starts through our preaching because preaching is what cultivates a heart for Christ most. We have a very specific system of preaching at CBSM… In 6 years (from 7th – 12th grade) we are preaching through the entire Bible (in order from Genesis – Revelation) and also through all 13 major Christian doctrines (from Doctrine of Christ – Doctrine of End Times). Our preaching is usually 45 minutes long, always Christ-centered, always expository, always grounded in the gospel, and always in your face challenging. That is what we’ve found produces and identifies leaders best.   Continue reading ‘Student Leadership Training at CBSM’

KTL Spring 2010: Training Teens to Teach the Word

Free resource for youth pastors:

KTL SPRING 2010 App and Schedule (doc)

Our KTL Ministry continues to be a huge hit at CBSM.  KTL simply stands for kayruxon ton logon…which is Greek for “preach the Word.”  That’s exactly what Paul kept repeating to Timothy over and over again.  For whatever gracious reason, God continually is blessing us with many students who are called into the ministry.  We want to be faithful to prepare these students not only for college, but also for immediate ministry opportunities that may come their way.  We’ll have around 15-20 guys in our KTL ministry this spring, and possibly around 10 girls.  The train the guys to teach and preach the Word, and we train the girls to teach the Word to other females and kiddies.  So I just wanted to post for you our KTL Spring 2010 ministry application, expectations, and schedule.  I pray this helps your mininstry somehow and in some way.

A Session for Students Called to Full-Time Ministry

Free resource for youth pastors:

Call to Full-Time Ministry SS (mp3)

Called to Full-Time Ministry SS Discussion (doc)

For whatever reason, God is graciously choosing to bless our student ministry with an extraordinary amount of students who believe they are called to full-time ministry…or starting to sense and consider that call.  I’m honestly not sure why.  There are nights that I preach the gospel for salvation, and students are called to ministry.  Its weird, its crazy, but its happening.  Just FYI: the biggest TREAT in this entire post is hearing close to 20 teens talk about God’s call on their life and what ministry they believe they’re called to.  Definitely check out the mp3!    Continue reading ‘A Session for Students Called to Full-Time Ministry’

Before we move forward, lets review exactly what these spiritual gifts are. What good will it do us if we move forward while forgetting what we’ve learned so far? Lesson 1 – Spiritual gifts include our passions, abilities, personality, and experiences that were once used for Satan’s kingdom. Jesus Christ our King has plundered that evil kingdom, rescued our gifts, and now we can use them for His kingdom! Lesson 2 – God has recorded many spiritual gifts in His Word, but not all of them are found there. He just gave us an idea to understand what they are and what some of them are. Our spiritual gifts can include many different abilities that Jesus has given us to use for His glory in the church. Looking at our spiritual SHAPE is very helpful. Now moving on… Continue reading ‘YOU GOT SKILLS: Discovering Your Spiritual Giftedness #3 – “What’s Your Ministry?” (1 Corinthians 12:4-7)’

YOU GOT SKILLS: Discovering Your Spiritual Giftedness #2 – “What’s Your Skill” (Romans 12:3-5)

Let’s review from the last lesson on what spiritual gifts actually are. Spiritual gifts are our God-given passions, abilities, personality, and experiences that were once used for Satan’s Kingdom. Jesus Christ plundered Satan’s kingdom by His death, rescued our giftedness from Satan, and now He has given them back to us so that we can use our spiritual gifts for His glory in His Kingdom. We use them for Him!

There are many spiritual gifts found in the Scriptures. In four different passages we see an apostle looking at the life of a church and noticing how they have been gifted spiritually. In Ephesians 4:11, Paul tells that church that Jesus has given out spiritual gifts for some to be apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers in the church. In Romans 12:6-8, Paul tells that church that he has noticed their spiritual giftedness of prophecy, service, teaching, exhortation, giver, leadership, and mercy. In 1 Corinthians 12:28, Pauls tells that church that he has noticed their spiritual giftedness of wisdom, knowledge, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues, interpretation, helping, administration, etc. Lastly, in 1 Peter 4:10-11, Peter tells the church that he has noticed their spiritual giftedness of speaking and serving. YOU GOT SKILLS: Discovering Your Spiritual Giftedness #1 – “Spoils from War” (Ephesians 4:1-16)

“What’d you get me, daddy?” I can remember excitedly asking that question to my dad whenever he’d return from a business trip. Being the brilliant man he is, he’d bring me home all the swag (stuff we all get) that the vendors would hand out for free like the highlighter triangle, the bouncy balls, and of course the oversized pencil. When I came back from a mission trip to Africa, I did something very similar. Being the awesome-cool Uncle that I am, I brought back my niece and nephews African musical instruments. This seems to be deeply embedded into our culture reaching back to the times when kings would take their armies to battle another nation. The victorious king would plunder the other nations goods by bringing back the spoils from war and handing them out to the citizens of his kingdom so that they could be used for their good.
