CBSM 6 Year Preaching Plan

Free resource for youth pastors:

CBSM 6 Year Preaching Plan (doc)

I’m considering the possibility of changing up the preaching schedule here at CBSM.  And some people say Baptists never change!  When I came here 2 years ago, I started preaching biblical theology (through the whole Bible) on Wednesday nights and systematic theology (through all Bible doctrine) on Sunday mornings.  Since then, we have stopped teaching systematic theology on Sunday mornings to put more emphasis on discussion, fellowship, and life-application by having our small groups on Sunday morning center around conversations on Wednesday night’s message.  So, for the last year I have been just preaching through biblical theology (the storyline of Scripture).

I’ve definitely been noticing our lack of systematic theology and doctrine lately.  I do believe that biblical theology is most important as we must understand the unfolding storyline of the work of God, the gospel in all things, and the person and work of Christ as the focus on the Father.  But systematic theology is important to because an understanding of doctrinal truths helps teens interpret the storyline correctly as to how it points us to Christ and applies to our lives.  So as we’re nailing the storyline, I want us to be thinking through systematic theology as well.  Continue reading ‘CBSM 6 Year Preaching Plan’

Persecuted Church: Holy Spirit (Brief Preaching Notes)

Our students walked into an almost completely dark student building.  Most of our lights were turned off, and a few of our led’s were turned to red and yellow to look like torches and turned down low.  The mood was set to look like many of the churches meeting around the world in secret, danger, and fear for their lives…as well as many churches like that back in church history.  We stripped away all of the bells and whistles.  We did 4 sessions (each an hour long) of 5 minutes of singing, 40 minutes of teaching, and 5-10 minutes of prayer.  Amazingly after 4 hours of sessions centered around teaching doctrine, our students simply asked, “Its over?  That’s it?  Can’t we stay longer?”  Now that is the joy and purpose of the Persecuted Church.  Here’s more about our Persecuted Church event…  Continue reading ‘Framework #26 – Persecuted Church: Doctrine of the Holy Spirit’

Baptism: More Than What Its Not (1 Peter 3)

baptism_winter_tBaptism (sermon notes)

Baptism – more than what its not (mp3)

I got the honor to preach to our church congregation this Sunday morning.  Since I’m the pastor here at the church who does most of the baptizing, I guess you could call me Chip the Baptizer or Chip the Baptist (sound familiar?).  Anywho, sincce I get this awesome opportunity on most Sunday mornings, I wanted our congregation to hear my passion for the truths of Christ that involve baptism.  Here are my sermon notes and mp3 of this sermon.  I hope it is a crazy blessing to you, and that you get to see many baptized at your church because they have repented of sin and believed in Christ.

Framework #25 – “Doctrine of God: God as Son and Spirit”

We started out this lesson with the discussion question: “In what ways are Jesus and the Holy Spirit alike, and in what ways are they different?” I wonder how many teenagers have asked themselves that question. I wonder if I thought about that at all when I was a teenager. This question isn’t just technical like splitting atoms nor is it too deep like asking about the elements found on the moon. We’re talking about our God! Continue reading ‘Framework #25 – “Doctrine of God: God as Son and Spirit”’

GTP – Chapter 9 and Conclusion

I don’t want my students to be either a bunch of theoogical egg-heads or a group of jerks walking around and debating theology.  I so desire them to be like Christ.  I want them to be full of grace and truth just like Jesus is (John 1:14).  I want my students to be able to love a Mormon, to give to an Atheist, to help a Muslim, etc.  At the same time, I want my students to defend the truths of Scripture, the proclaim the gospel, and to be willing to die for Christ.  I pray for them to be full of grace and truth like Jesus.  Continue reading ‘Book Study: “The Grace and Truth Paradox” (chapter 9 and Conclusion)’

1+1+1=1: The Doctrine of the Trinity Resources

trinityAs I’m teaching my students on the doctrine of the Trinity, I have come across some awesome resources for my to read, study, and learn…and then to communicate it to them in more of their own language.  The best stuff I’ve come across is anything by Dr. Bruce Ware.  He wrote the book “Father, Son, and Spirit”.  He also did a conference at John Piper’s church.  Here are the 3 sweet mp3’s from those lectures.  I promise you…you’ll love them!

Trinity of Persons – Ware Session #1 (mp3)

Jesus and the Father – Ware Session #2 (mp3)

Jesus and the Spirit – Ware Session #3 (mp3)

If you are looking for more resources from the conference, you can go here: http://www.desiringgod.org/ResourceLibrary/ConferenceMessages/ByConference/9/
If you enjoy it…your students will, too!

Framework #24 – “Doctrine of God: God as Father and Son”

It was at a Mexican restaurant where I tested them theologically for the first time. I remember one of the first weeks I was here with my student ministry. I asked them the question: “If the Father is God and the Son is God, does that mean that the Father is really the Son and the Son is really the Father?” Most of them answered “yes.” Finally, fourteen months later, I got to talk about that very topic that I first tested them with.

When it comes to understanding God as Trinity, we must understand Him intimately within all three of His persons. We’ll kick it off with God as Father and Son. Continue reading ‘Framework #24 – “Doctrine of God: God as Father and Son”’
