This “storyline~framework” blog is ultimately for pastors to students, youth ministers, Sunday school teachers, small group leaders, Christian school teachers, teenagers and college students who are interested in learning more about a Christocentric view of Scripture and doctrine.  The blog is everything we cover in our student ministry as we’re going through the entire Bible and all of systematic theology in a way that is pointed directly to Christ and relevantly applied to the life of students.   (Why We Do What We Do Every Wednesday mp3) Read the rest of this entry »

San Diego, CA Mission Trip Day #3

VisionSDWe had a super Monday.  We slept in a little, ate breakfast, and left the hotel at 9am.  We headed on over to Midway Baptist Church for the “Powerplant” conference for teenagers on church planting and evangelism.  I love that our students have this opportunity to hear about church planting since we hardly ever talk about it or hear about it.  My prayer is that God raises church planters out of our group, wives of church planters, individuals who will be willing to join a church plant someday and help them reach people for Christ.  I want them to have a hear for their city and see Christ glorified in their city.  We sat in two sessions taught by two church planting pastors in the San Diego area.

We then left and went to our lunch paradise.  A lady in the church plant we’re working for is feeding us all week.  She has this paradise-like backyard where we all just chill out and stuff our faces.  She had baked chicken, rice, and beans.  It was crazy delicious!   Read the rest of this entry »

San Diego, CA Mission Trip Day #2

VisionSDWe had the honor on Sunday of leading the whole church service at the church plant we work with.  I was really thankful that we got that opportunity as its something very special to be able to lead worship and preaching in a Sunday morning worship service for an entire local church.  So our praise band and I left at about 8am to practice for the service this morning.  This is definitely a church that thrives on prepartion.  We got there and started practicing for the church service, then we went to their youth Sunday school, then prayed as a part of their prayer meeting, etc.  The service then started at 10:30am with our praise band rocking out some serious worship tunes towards Christ.  After about 3 songs, I got up and preached on what it means to be created in the image of God, how that image in us was affedcted by sin, and how we can be restored in the image of God specifically through Christ (Gen 1, Gen 3, Col 1, Col 3).   Read the rest of this entry »

San Diego, CA Mission Trip Day #1

VisionSDWhat is the San Diego, CA Mission Trip?  Well, in our student ministry, we take our 7th graders and up to a missions based summer camp for a week (beginner level).  We take our 9th graders and up to a missions training conference for a week (intermediate level).  And we take our 11th graders and up to a full-blown all-out mission trip for a week.  This year we’re rocking some sweet missions opps in San Diego!

So yesterday (Saturday), we flew out for San Diego.  We had 2 relatively smooth flights.  5 of our students had never flown before!  We arrived in San Diego at about 5pm, and didn’t get out of the rental car place until about 6pm…or a little later.  I so almost scored a Mini-Cooper, but Bart (much more mature adult leader) totally talked me out of it.  It was a good move on his part…but I sure wanted that convertible Cooper to drive around Cali in!   Read the rest of this entry »

Piggy-backing off last week’s lesson, I have another story from my canoe trip in Canada.  One of the days there while portaging (hiking with the canoe on my shoulders from lake to lake), I was following behind my canoe partner since I couldn’t see where I was going.  What was supposed to be a 2 minute hike turned into about 30 minutes…and longer.  I decided to run ahead a mile to try and find the rest of the crew, but all I found was myself all alone in the middle of the Canadian wilderness and defenseless while wearing a bright yellow “come and get me all you wild animals” life jacket.  I followed the wrong leader which led me to isolation, fear, helplessness, and danger.

The same is true for our lives.  I want to challenge you on where the wrong leader will lead you, and to give you some reasons as to why you need to follow Christ.  Read the rest of this entry »

CBSM: White Water Rafting Trip!

White Water RaftingCBSM!  Think WHITE.  Think WATER.  Think RAFTING.  If you don’t get it by now…go back to sleep.  That’s right, we’re taking you on a student ministry White Water Rafting trip to the Ocoee River in Tennessee.  Get pumped!  We will leave Thursday, July 30th at 8:00am and will return that night.  The total cost for the trip is $30 for rafting and $5 for gas (to whoever gives you a ride).  Yes, we are asking you to find your own ride.  The trip is about 3 hours long each way.  We will have some drivers going, but most students will need to find their own ride.  And NO, students cannot drive themselves…but thanks for asking.  You will need money for lunch and supper, and you must be at least 12 years old to raft.  We’re making this a quick trip just before back to school, so we’re asking you to sign up quickly and get your money in by this Wednesday, July 8.  All you need to turn in is your $30 check to Penny Fowler (payable to Capshaw Baptist) tomorrow (Sunday), or this Wednesday (July 8).  If you want to go but you can’t pay your money yet, just call Penny Fowler to keep a spot for you open.  If you need more info, you can check out www.ocoeeriver.biz.  Let’s do this!

I remember one of the most challenging but yet most rewarding trips I ever took was when I went with a college group to the Algonquin National Forrest up in Canada for a week of camping, canoeing, and portaging.  It was a spiritual journey to build leadership.  Every day a new leader would be picked out of the group to take the map, direct the crew, and get us to our destination of the day…many miles away.  On the last day, the guide told us to pick out our own leader.  My “genius” group decided to not pick a leader, but to let the group’s consensus (in canoes, on a lake, etc) lead the way.  Needless to say, that day was a disaster.  We learned the need for point leadership.

We all desire point leadership in our own lives.  This is common to everyone!  We desperately want something or someone to rule over us, something or someone to follow, and some purpose to devote our lives to.  Whether that turns into a person’s group of friends, a significant other, a career, a future dream to achieve, or just plain self-centeredness…everyone is desperate for a king.  God has purposely designed us this way. This Wednesday: Fireworks at the Fowlers

fireworksatfowlersAight, so yall know I don’t like to do this stuff toooo often.  I think the best way to reach your friends for Christ is to bring them to a regular Wednesday night worship service so that they see Jesus in action by our lives of worship.  But this Wednesday, we just can’t help ourselves!  Our worship service will start at 6pm this Wednesday only.  After the worship service, we’ll head over to the Fowler’s house for some food (a cookout) and some fireworks (provided by you).  This is a great opportunity to bring your friends, for them to be a part of our Wednesday night worship service, and for them to get to know us in a more informal way at the Fowler’s.  The goal: to have a great time together and introduce them to Jesus!  So you need to bring all your friends, some fireworks, some food (either a 2 liter, a dessert, or some chips), and a lawnchair to sit back and enjoy the show.  We’ll get done at the Fowlers around 10pm on Wednesday night.  Last year we had almost 100…let’s defiitely work hard to get over that hundred hump.  See yall there.

VBX 2009: Boomerang Express – It All Comes Back To Jesus!

Our church just got done with one phenomenal week of Vacation Bible School: Boomerang Express from Lifeway.  I must say: I was very impressed and somewhat shocked when I saw that the motto for the VBS week was “It All Comes Back to Jesus.”  The main lesson that I learned in seminary was how all the Scripture, God is calling us to be Christ-centered.  All of the Old Testament is pointing forward to the person and work of Christ while all of the New Testament is proclaiming the person and work of Christ.  So it was crazy cool to be able to teach that this week to our kids.

I was in charge of the VBX week which was specifically for all the students going into the 6th and 7th grade this fall.  This is the age group that is usally the least attended for VBS’s.  Because that seems to be the case, we have done absolutely everything possible to step-it-up for the tween-agers, seriously hype it, and show them that they are never too cool for Christ.  So in this blog post I’m going to give you the schedule of what we did every day…and how we did it.  And by the way, our VBX usually makes up for about a fourth of the entire VBS attenders, the students LOVE it, and they keep coming back! Email from a not-so-skeptic student…anymore!

After a Wednesday worship service, a newer visiting student came up to me and told me how much he had loved visiting our student ministry over the past few weeks.  He told me he wanted to write me an email about what was going on in his life.  Read this.  I was blown away.  Please be praying for him as God continues to work in his life to bring him closer to salvation in Jesus Christ!  I just wanted to share this with you.

“Alright, heres whats goin on

Pretty much church has never made a whole lot of sence to me, I never understood what was going on, I only went when I was younger cause my mom took me.  When I got old enough to start making my own decisions I stopped going, that was like 10 or 11.  Few years after that I got into high school and started talking to people who not only didnt believe but dis-believed.  I started doing the same thing, shooting down the bible and making excuses wherever I could.  Well I started having a rough time at school and just in general close to the end of this school year.  I started seeing a councilor about it and I had been talking to samantha recently around school.  My councilor said I needed to get outa the house and do something with friends.  So I asked [my friend] if I could come to church with her, and of course she said yes.  So I showed up Wednesday night and I had a lot of fun and it really spoke to me, more so then I had ever felt it.  So I’v been returning and really enjoying myself.  The Bible has never made sense to me until now, I’m actually interested in reading it.  I’m just having a hard time believing in everything after dis-believing for so long.  I’m also attempting not to get attached to capshaw baptist because I’m leaving come fall, so I’m kinda stuck in a limbo sort of thing, not sure if I should move forward or not.  I realize how important it is to accept Jesus and to know God, and I want to do both.  I just need some guidance on what I need to do and how to go about it.
Sorry for the long e-mail, and thank you so much for taking your time to read over it.
Looking forward to your opinion”
